The biggest advantage of KMS is that you don't have to mess with product keys and manual activation on your Vista machines. You only have to activate the KMS once, and then your Vista computers are activated by connecting to the KMS. Here the essentials about KMS: KMS facts and requirements • One KMS host can service thousands of Vista clients. • You can run a second KMS host as backup system. • KMS is available for Windows Server 2003 SP1. • You can also use a Vista machine as KMS host. • Also check out my post about the. • KMS activation can be used for Vista Business and Enterprise edition. • Activation for the OEM edition is only supported if the KMS host is a Vista machine. • At least 25 Vista machines have to connect to the KMS before clients can be activated; the number of machines connected to the KMS is referred to as n-count or n value. • Virtual machines can be activated by the KMS, but they don't contribute to n-count. • The KMS host mustn't run in a virtual machine. KMS time periods • New installed Vista machine have a 30-day grace period to activate. • If a Vista computer didn't activate during this time, it will go into Reduced Functionality Mode (RFM). • KMS clients which are not yet activated contact the KMS host every two hours (value configurable). • Afterwards they auto-renew their activations every 7 days (value configurable) • KMS clients have to renew their activation at least after 180 days. • If activation fails, the client has again a 30 days grace period before going into RFM. • The KMS host contacts Microsoft every 180 days. If there was a misuse with your KMS key, your KMS host will be disabled! (I didn't find this information in the documentation, but a Microsoft official said this on an info session at our computer center.) Originally, I also planned to write about the KMS installation in this post, but then I ran into some interesting problems. I wasn't able to active KMS on a Windows server. However, the same key worked on a Vista machine. I also didn't find srv records of the KMS host in our Windows DNS server. Did anyone get this working? To be continued. I have had interesting experiences concerning KMS-key. I have succesfully activated 5 workstations using KMS key. There was no KMS-server around when doing that. Those workstations were in workgroup neigbourhood. When i joined one of those systems in domain Vista deactivated itselfs. When i tried to activate workstation in domain neighbourhood, there was an error message stating that KMS-server was not found. I then joined workstation back to workgroup and tried to activate again. This time i was presented an error message saying that my key was allready in use.sigh. Michael, Could you clarify your statement that the KMS host must not run on a virtual machine? The following extract from the 'Volume Activation 2 0 Changes for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista SP1.doc' states that: KMS can be hosted on a virtual machine running Windows Vista RTM, Windows Vista SP1, Windows Server 2008 RTM, or Windows Server 2003 running KMS for Windows Server 2003 v1.1. My concern is that if vmotion moves the KMS host, it will break the activation of the KMS host because new hardware will be detected. Well done, i am Rudiwilson. Today I was working on a brand new Windows 7 x64-bit machine that suddenly started saying it wouldn't activate because our KMS server says it doesn't have enough Windows 7 machines contacting it. When I looked into this, I came upon the realization (through checking our DNS server for _VLMCS service entries) that instead of the 2 KMS Hosts we should have, we actually have 4. Two were ones I set up, one I suspect was a server activated using the KMS Host key instead of a MAK key, but the fourth one is a real head-scratcher.a Vista Ultimate machine we have handling TV signal distribution is injecting _VLMCS entries into DNS! I've been searching and reading for how this could be possible, and more importantly, how to kill it, but I haven't had much luck. What should I do? Hello, Yes I want to see the MGAdiag output as well. Windows Vista Ultimate is not supposed to be able to become a KMS host( only Windows Vista Professional and Windows Vista Enterprise) To kill it you would need to change the product key installed to a Retail or OEM key for Windows Vista Ultimate, activate with the new product key and reboot. It would no longer be a KMS host machine, but you may have to manually remove the DNS entry from your DNS server. Hello Noel, The rule is for Volume License media only, and this is not volume license media. If it was volume license media, the check is does a SLIC table exist, if it does then a Windows Marker needs to be present. If there is no SLIC table there cannot be Windows Marker so no check can be done, so machines could be a KMS client. But to get back to the issue this: Actually this machine is runing with Retail actvation, plus it's Windows Vista Ultimate for which no Volume licensing is available. This is not a KMS machine, either client and host and cannot be one ever. Why do we think it's one? This Windows Vista machine is using Retail copy of licesence and it is already activated. Hello Brett, On the Vista Ultimate machine, open the application event log and look for Event 12293 and or event 12294. Do you see any of those events? There should be no way this machine is publishing to DNS, you may want to check to make sure there are not duplicate computernames. Can you do a nslookup -type=all _vlmcs._tcp from an elevated cmd prompt then check that the IP addresses match this machine's IP address. Sorry for the delay in responding, we had a major network SNAFU occur a couple of weeks ago that threw things in turmoil when we had to move DHCP from a Windows Server to one of our routers.was waiting for the dust to settle and things to get new IP's. I logged into the Vista Ultimate machine in question and on the very first screen of the application event log, I found an event 12294 that occurred at 12:54:39 PM today: 'Publishing the Key Management Service (KMS) to DNS in the 'bucolor.com' domain was successful.' Digging further in the log, this appears to be happening daily at 12:54PM. No event 12293's found, though. So this confirms your Vista Ultimate machine is acting as KMShost and successfully publishing itself into your DNS, advertising its KMShost service. You could dig into why it has a KMShost product key installed in it, and consider changing that to a KMSclient pkey or a retail pkey or whatever. Unless you really want to pursue the matter of 'why is it doing that, when it's not supposed to be *able* to do that' Don. Hello Brett, Well there shouldn't be a key since this should not be a KMS host, but that would be a key for publishing if it was a KMS host. But I will never go to a Village cinema again. So after getting a $100 food and movie gift card for my birthday (sold in WA) I find that only the food gift voucher can be used in WA and not the village cinemas movie card as there is not one in WA. Emailing customer services was a wast of time as they suggested returning it to the person who gave it to me or sending it to someone who is able to use it. Thanks for the helpful advice, bit no thanks village cinemas. Why sell these gift cards in a state that cant even use it? Your customer service is appalling. My children were give a kids pack for their birthday last April, with other Village vouchers including Gold class, taken them almost a year to get through them all, off they went to redeem their kids pack prior to what we believe was the 12months expiration date to be told it expired in 6 months of purchase date??? Get your glasses out to read the fine print, how about writing the expiration date so we know it's not the usual 12 months you criminals! Thanks for upsetting 12 year olds you money grabbing thieves. I received a $100 gift card for my birthday in November 2015. I rarely go to the movies and didn't really think about it, until my wife and I were going to Melbourne for a weekend. I checked the voucher and it expired in November 2016. After reading some of the comments online I thought I had missed out. I called the support centre just to see if they could do anything and was told that the policy is only to accept current vouchers, but they could extend the voucher until the end of January. This was all sorted out within 5 minutes, both Isaac and Maddison were very helpful. We had a great night and it was a good way to see a movie. Thanks Village Cinemas. Tried booking tonight's movie with our $100 gold class gift card only to learn it expired! Spoke with customer service and while they were polite - they offered NO solution other than they get to keep the $100 and we are left with nothing. For a loyal village customer who routinely spends $100 each visit to the movies - this leaves me feeling like I've just been robbed of $100. It would have been a better solution for them to reissue the card yet. No they just told me they knew how I felt. I don't think they do - to not honour a gift card that purely represents a cash value (not some special or unique offer) is theft. Money doesn't expire and the card represents the money paid for it. Worst case of corporate robbery I've experienced. We received Gold Class admit one vouchers as a gift. I know that they cost $40 each and as it happens the tickets for the session we are attending cost $30. (I'm actually okay with that, it happens). However, we also had to pay a $5 booking fee for each ticket and that could not be taken out of the value of the voucher. So each ticket ended up costing $15 extra. If you want to give your friends movie tickets, just give them cash and tell them what it's for. Otherwise you're just donating money to Village without return.
